Parliament Hill, Today, Carleton Place resident, Mr. Gary Strike, presented the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, with three flags carrying the signatures of Canadians who support our troops overseas.
Each of the flags was originally a blank flag-sized piece of white fabric on which Canadians signed their names in red ink, until the red of the signatures formed the bars and maple leaf of the Canadian flag. The flags were available at selected businesses this past February in conjunction with Flag Day.
Mr. Gary Strike, a former Carleton Place town councillor, and a very strong supporter of our troops, organized flag signing events to demonstrate the high level of support, here at home, for our troops risking their lives in Afghanistan.
“Gary is well known for his patriotic activities. “said local MP Scott Reid. “I commend him for creating this project, which allowed so many of us to demonstrate to our troops how much we support them.”
Reid went on to say “The Defence Minister pointed out that gestures of support such as these flags are very much appreciated by our troops. He will be personally delivering the flags to our troops on his next trip to Afghanistan.”
